This matches with perceptions and reality of agro forestry commitment undertaken by local farmers. This study underscores the different agricultural techniques practiced in Oku. This write up explores information gathered from focus groups, clear-cut direct observation from sowing, weeding, harvesting and storage of produce, interview of local farmers, and spot visits to selected farms within the locale. The biophysical setting of the milieu favours the practice of agro forestry. Farmers’ perception and expectations were investigated using field data, statistical findings and interview results. Obtained results revealed the positive correlation existing between perceptions and reality in the quality, quantity and variety of outputs obtained at the end of the farming season. Local techniques harnessed with modern methods positively matches perceptions and reality in this domain.

Researches have been carried out about factors that inform performance of firms, however the extent to which occupational accidents influence performance shaped by occupational health and safety policy regulations has received limited attention in the main stream firm researches. Occupational accidents in Kenya have witnessed an annual growth of 30% based on available statistics that continues to influence performance of firms negatively. The objective of this study was to establish the influence of occupational accidents on performance of firms in Kenya. The study was founded on two theories namely: Contingency theory and General Adaptation Syndrome theory. The study was anchored on Positivism and Interpretivism Paradigms realized by explanatory research design method. The target population was 2107 with a sample size of 414. Stratified, convenient and proportionate sampling techniques were used. Data was analyzed by descriptive statistics and partial least squares structural equation modeling aided by Warp PLS. v. 5 software. The findings showed that occupational accidents moderated by health and safety policy regulations to influence performance of firms at βeta coefficient of (β = -0.27, p = 0.020 < 0.05 Occupational health and safety policy regulation moderation effect was at β = -023, p = 0.04 < 0.05). Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to define a new combined model of business valuation for family firm, considering the implications of IC. The role of the family component in business valuation is condensed into the continuity of a trans-generational perspective. The question appears to be centred on the consistency of the familiness link with respect to the economic entity. In other words, it becomes essential to understand the provisional character of the proactive action of family members on business performance levels. After having discussed some of critical theoretical opinions on the peculiar aspects of family business—with particular attention to the relationship between the contribution of cognitive resources inferable from the familiness in the company management and the propensity to create value by the company itself—the aim is to find the most appropriate method to enhance the specificity of the family business and express the size of the equity value in a neutral and objective manner. The methodology is deductive; the integrated model is structured starting from the general framework of business valuation and then proceeds with its adaptation to familiness, intended as a particular attestation of IC. In this way, a new integrated model is made available for a subsequent step of empirical implementation and validation through its application in a family organization. The main advantage of this model is the ability to measure and manage IC and financial/non-financial performance. The added value of this work will enrich the academic literature regarding IC measurement systems in family firms; it also provides an original integrated model that is able to exhibit the advantages highlighted above.

Abstract: Organisations aim at providing best quality at the lowest cost. It is beneficial to identify values and work preferences generation Y in order to employ, develop, retain and prepare them for future leadership. Talent Management strategies that enhance retention of the required talents enables the organisation gain a competitive advantage. The study sought to understand if leveraging on Generation Y’s talents puts the organisation in a better competitive position. The research objective was to determine whether introduction of the mediating variable of human resource capability had any effect on the relationship between talent management strategies for generation Y and the commercial bank’s competitive advantage. The target population of the study comprised of 43 Commercial Banks in Kenya and the given unit of observation was 6 departments in each bank namely: human resources, finance, marketing, credit, treasury and Audit. The findings of the study revealed that Talent Management Strategies alone contributed a fairly good extent to competitive advantage of banks at 55.3% (Ṝ2=.553). An inclusion of a mediating variable, HR Capability presented a percentage level of 39.8% (Ṝ2=.398). Further tested whether the mediating variable had any effect on the relationship between the independent variables and the dependent variable. Multiple regression models were used to predict the relationship which proved to be true with a positive percentage of 55.8% (Ṝ2=0.558), an increase in the value of Ṝ2 by 0.005. This indicates that the mediating variable has a statistically significant effect on the relationship between talent management strategies and the competitive advantage, hence concluding that HR Capability derived from application of talent management strategies has a partial mediating effect on the relationship between talent management strategies for generation Y and competitive advantage of commercial banks in Kenya. Thus, the study notes that the strength of the relationship between talent management strategies for generation Y depends on the level of HR Capability arising from the strategies.

Abstract: The use of Human Resources Information System (HRIS) has recently become an important feature of Human Resource Management (HRM) in the emerging economies including Tanzania. In this paper, we review the usage and challenges of Human Resources Information System (HRIS) in Tanzania. Based on systematic review of policies, legislation and scientific literature, we examine the practice, new developments and challenges facing the uptake of HRIS in Tanzania. A systematic qualitative synthesis using nomothetic-based content analysis is used in the paper to analyse the collected information for the purpose of advancing argument on HRIS usage effectiveness. Our findings show that HRIS has been useful in HRM in Tanzania particularly in recruitment and selection, updating and maintenance of employee data, generating HR reports, employees’ deductions, direct deposit distributions, career planning; and training, and development. Despite the relevance and promising contributions of HRIS to effective HRM in the public sector, we document five important challenges associated with the usage of HRIS which include: (1) unsteady financial capacity to acquire, update and maintain the HRIS; (2) inadequate ICT and HRIS expertise among the HRM workforce; (3) inadequate coordination of government machinery in the performance of their statutory responsibilities; (4) instability of internet connectivity and (5) inadequate top management support. On the basis of challenges identified, we recommend the following recommendations: - Firstly, the government should increase budget allocations to Ministries, Department and Agencies (MDAs) and Local Government Authorities (LGAs) to ensure adequate procurement of facilities and development of skilled workforce in HRIS and Information Technology (IT). Secondly, we recommend strengthening of coordination between different departments responsible for HRIS management in order to speed up information flow to system users for complete and accurate output and timely updating of employees’ data.

Abstract: Inviting foreign companies to set up factories in host countries not only helps improve the local economy, but it also helps to develop local manpower. This is because most foreign companies tend to bring in their own specialists who end up training the local workers specific new skills that end up upgrading the human resources capacity and hence the economy of the host countries. This has the potential to build Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) into an influential element for the development of Human Resource Management (HRM) of the host countries. This is especially true for developing economies where HRM is still rudimentary. Also, income generated from FDI can enhance the proper functioning of HRM that will in turn drive organizations to achieve set production goals. Qualified foreign Human Resource Experts (HRE) have the responsibility to hire and train local workers on improving job outputs. Thus, by focusing not only on theories, but also practical applications of HRM in Sierra Leone, this paper analyzed the role of foreign companies, especially Chinese companies, in economic development in Sierra Leone. The paper discussed the challenges foreign companies face in Sierra Leone, where HRM is still rudimentary. It put forward practicable solutions towards such problems in the hope that the stakeholders and decision-makers in the country can begin to look at FDI as an integral element for the human, socio-economic and cultural development of the country.
