Abstract: Traditional knowledge (TK) refers to knowledge, innovations, and practices of local communities in globe. Documentation of TK helps to identify local community with whom benefit of commercialization of such knowledge is to be shared. This study aimed to document traditional knowledge associated with food and beverage preparation in Borena Zone of Oromia Region. The data was collected using semi-structured questionnaires, interviews, and focus group discussions. Informants were recommended by district’s Culture and Tourism offices. Preparation method, ingredients, mode of preparation, current status, and purpose of preparation were the focus point of data collection. Data was analyzed by SPSS version 21. A total of 64 individuals (25 men and 39 women); aged 17 to 78 with mean age of 40.00 ± 15.44 years were recruited. The minimum, maximum, and average years they lived in the study area were 17, 78, and 40.00 ± 15.44, respectively. Findings revealed that a total of eleven traditional foods and drinks were listed by respondents: Yabelo nine (six traditional foods and three traditional drinks); Dire nine (six traditional foods and three traditional drinks); and Arero six (four traditional foods and two traditional drinks). Salting, drying, boiling, toasting, frying, baking, cooking, and fermentation are the major practices that were used by the community to prepare their local foods or drinks. Informants prepare the foods/beverages customarily during public holidays such as memorial days and birth day; and occasionally for wedding ceremony, funeral, visiting respected relatives, and for respected invitee. Economic problems, urbanization, and benefiting modernization were claimed by informants that these are determinant factors to prepare traditional foods/beverages frequently at home. To conclude, there is great gap in using traditional knowledge associate with foods and beverages preparation in Ethiopia. There should be special emphasis to optimize preparation procedures through modern biotechnology and promote for commercialization access for modern companies to share benefits arising from the utilization.

Abstract: The story of the half-peas is a folk tale and the story of the Magician of the Oz, written and translated with a very solid plot in children’s literature, shows a great deal of similarity and homogeneity; from a functional and language attitude point of view, the story of the half peas and the magician of Oz, after praising and indispensable of pragmatism, the possibility of similarity and commonality of popular and childish ideas in the quest for self-knowledge, truth and braveness, socialization and joining the community, manifest. In this descriptive-analytical research, it is shown that this continuity corresponds not only in simple expression and language but also in basic principles and ideas, and inductive findings indicate that there is an archetype of hero’s journey, with three stages of separation, arrival and return, in both stories, and this common point of the myth connects vulgarity with childhood. Contrary to the simplicity of their language, which facilitates the transmission of the heritage of the past and the live experiences of human beings, popular and childish literature is thought provoking and full of knowledge, and carries the heavy burden of passing on cultural themes and concepts from generation to generation.

Role of Ethiopian Economic Diplomacy in the Implementation of Integrated Housing Development Program and Real Estate Development in Addis Ababa

Abstract: This study focused on role of Ethiopian economic diplomacy in the implementation of integrated housing development program and real estate development. Besides, the paper explores the contribution of housing on the economic, political and social life of the society. Then it assessed the challenges of housing development in Addis Ababa. Thus, qualitative research method and semi structured in-depth interview was conducted. Addis Ababa is selected as a case study because the housing crisis is acute. The thesis found colossal number of houses are constructed and transferred to the society which has direct economic, political and social effect to the beneficiaries, contractures, consultants, MSE’s, suppliers and others. The paper uncovers Addis Ababa housing sector had shortcomings of not utilizing technology, financial scarcity and maladministration. Moreover, Ethiopian economic diplomacy had a strategic advantage for affordable housing in getting the specified amount of materials and quality at reasonable cost directly from producers. The study concluded that the prospects and challenges of Addis Ababa housing exude from the socialist oriented government decrees, policy and procedures. Ethiopian economic diplomacy is imperative motor for housing development in Addis Ababa. The recommendation for Addis Ababa City Administration was to curb its internal maladministration problem and prepare pragmatic policies that proliferate formal housing. Finally, Ethiopian economic diplomats and joint task force shall vigorously pursuit options for housing development by breaking bureaucratic red tapes, showing gaps of housing, attraction of mega manufacturing firms, tycoon housing developers, soliciting technical and financial aid.
