Abstract: This paper aims to explore the effective use of teaching materials from textbooks in the English learning classroom. Undoubtedly, language teaching materials play a significant role for success in language teaching. It’s the same in the Second Language Acquisition (SLA) leaning process. This paper discusses the way English language learning materials function in the three principal areas of classroom ecology: curriculum, classroom discourse, and language acquisition through a comparative classroom-based study of one-unit-learning in the two of the author’s English classes, both which have the similar English language level and capacity. Adaptation of materials is fundamentally acknowledged as important for meeting SLA learners’ needs. In the first classroom language teaching materials on the textbook were used only and fully. In the other classroom language teaching materials on the textbook were adapted by the teacher. Through analyzing the actual patterns of teacher adaptation and the effect on learners, observing learners’ engagement with them, comparing learners’ output and interviewing some students, the study shows that purposefully designed content choices of language teaching materials led to the affordance for more meaningful discourse, more active interaction and more fruitful outcome. The study identifies four main ways of using teaching materials from textbooks in the classroom, including selecting, reordering, revising and supplementing, which are testified workable and practical.

Abstract: Women have been seen through the lens of art from the very commencement of civilization. Beauty itself was personified in the form of a woman. An effort is being made to analyse various shades that have been concatenated with her image over the period. Women have been an important part of society. She has played many important roles like homemaker, mother, wife, and at times lover. Women have equally participated in many activities like paintings but never got the recognition that they deserve. The popular paintings of Ajanta paintings have also shown females as highlighting the fertility part in their ample curves. This movement is further explained in the Mauryan and Buddhist periods, where they represented women as the Yogini. Also, in Khajuraho sculptures, women are revealed as Apsaras and Surasundaris who are involved in various activities. Here female nudity has been regarded as a powerful fertility charm. Artists in Rajasthani miniature painting often represented moods (bhava) through a female character known as the Leading lady (nayika). In his paintings, Raja Ravi Verma described the divine aspect of ladies. Amrita Shergil, India's most recognized female artist, also created feminist works. M. F. Hussain's favourite topics were likewise ladies. The representation of women in this situation is cynosure. Women's socioeconomic standing has been mirrored by Indian artists throughout history. However, women in India in the twenty-first century have numerous challenges, and their social standing is rapidly changing. Women in India are now seen not only as nurturers and mothers but also in a variety of important jobs in society. This paper analyses how contemporaries interact in this study.

Abstract: The Igbos make up one of the three major ethnic groups in Nigeria. They are both egalitarian and patriarchal in nature and they believe in the principles of justice and fairness. Consequently, they operate a cultural worldview which compels every member of the society to operate by the society’s rules and standards of behaviour and the transgression of which attracts some sanction. As a patriarchal society, they place a high premium on paternal honour and respect. This is reflected in one of their proverbs: “Nwata tulie nna ya elu, ogodo nna ya ayochie ya anya”. (A child who dishonours his father by treating him like a toy is blinded by the father’s loin cloth/scrotum). This illustrates the fact that the Igbos demand for justice on acts of paternal/parental dishonour. This proverb is brought home in Achebe’s Things Fall Apart (1958, henceforth Things) and Adichie's Purple Hibiscus (2006, henceforth, Purple), two novels set in Igbo community and authored by Igbo writers These two works are related in their heroes’ dishonourable treatment of their fathers and the grievous sanctions that come with such despicable acts. This essay adopts the above Igbo proverb and Jeremy Collier’s view of literature as a discipline that encourages virtue and condemns vice (P. 97). It argues that the protagonists’ transgression of the Igbo code of filial relationship spells their disastrous end, and concludes on the note that Achebe and Adichie, two Nigerian Igbo writers, inscribe their cultural worldview and identity in these novels.

Abstract: This study looked into how effective cooperative learning is in helping students improve their English speaking skills. Guto Adulan high school in West Shoa Zone, Bako Tibe Woreda was chosen as the study site and two EFL teachers and 54 students in grade ten were the participants. Questionnaires, observation and interviews were used as data collection methods and the analysis of the data was done through frequency, percentage and mean score as well as qualitative methods. Results showed that most EFL teachers had been using traditional approaches or teacher-centered language learning methods and the main cause of the low level of cooperative learning usage was the number of students in the classroom, seating arrangements, textbook volumes, misunderstanding of cooperative learning and the students' poor English language background. Suggestions were provided based on the findings to help the effectiveness of cooperative language learning and improve student speaking skills. These include motivating, encouraging and giving attention to group discussions, observing and evaluating group work, conducting feedback in groups, giving teachers more training in this area and students continuing to maintain what they have achieved and having more practice using cooperative learning. Further research on the topic is recommended as well as school management reducing the number of students in the classroom, requesting additional EFL teachers from the concerned body and supervising teachers in the classroom.

Abstract: Sam Shepard’s family plays, such as Curse of the Starving Class, Buried Child, True West, and Fool for Love, are replete with absent fathers, haunted sons, and marginalized mothers and daughters, all are linked thematically in their examination of familial disintegration in a fractured society. As the conclusion of Shepard’s “family quintet,” A Lie of the Mind (1985) symbolizes a major break in Shepard’s career. The play not only addresses the fragmentation that results from domestic violence, gender conflict, and war trauma, but also explores individual repair and family resilience in the transgenerational transmission of trauma. It represents Shepard’s first clear move away from cultural determinism towards a genuine belief in the potential for personal transformation and the re-establishment of familial connections that are essential to building post-traumatic resilience. In light of the theories of transgenerational trauma and family resilience, this essay will examine the vulnerability and positive adaptation of some of the play’s main characters, who experience traumatic events and then develop effective ways to heal and recover. In the case of the play, Shepard criticizes American cultural heritage that is transmitted through successive generations, especially the Anglo-American cultural ideal of the “rugged individualism” and myths of “invulnerability” and “self-sufficiency,” advocating instead a relational view that emphasizes connectedness and interdependence with others.

Abstract: Conjugal relationship is one of the basic human relationships which lay the foundation of family life and strengthen family bonding. Marriage is the basis of this relationship-it begins with marriage and ends with death of or divorce from the partner. It is considered to be the most important human relationships as it has a considerable bearing on domestic peace and social integration. Husband and wife are not just sexual partners in a household but two individuals physically, emotionally, financially, and socially interdependent and in serious commitment to each other. Conflicts arising out of the complications in conjugal relationship have been dealt with as an important theme in Indian English novels. Manju Kapur (b. 1948) is one of the reputed living Indian women novelists in English and her novel, the immigrant (2008), which primarily deals with the theme of immigration to Canada, also presents the changing faces of conjugal conflicts concerning a well settled immigrant who joins his family in India to marry an Indian girl, sponsors his wife for immigration to Canada and brings her to Canada as his conjugal partner. The paper seeks to explore the nuances of the conjugal life of the immigrant couple during the transition from nationalization to globalization, which create problems and trigger conflicts in their life abroad.

Abstract: The double-incremental-theme effect suggests that the telicity effect of different incremental objects of accomplishments depends on each other in English. This paper shows that this kind of aspectual effect is not manifested in accomplishments in Mandarin. The assumption is that the telicity effect of different incremental objects of an accomplishment is independent of each other in Mandarin. The quantization of the theme determines the telicity of a motion predicate or a change-of-state predicate, whose telicity is originally supposed to be contributed by the boundedness of the path or the scale of the change of state. When the figure is with quantized reference, a motion predicate in Mandarin is telic whether the path is bounded or not. Likewise, the change-of-state predicate in Mandarin, with a theme of quantized reference, is telic, no matter whether the relevant change of the state on the scale involved is bounded or not. Therefore, this study argues that there is a hierarchy in incremental themes that are co-occurring to contribute to the aspectual effect of accomplishments in Mandarin. For motion predicates and change-of-state predicates in Mandarin, the quantization of the incremental theme is more decisive in determining their telicity than the boundedness of the path or change-of-state in question.

This paper shows that this kind of aspectual effect is not manifested in accomplishments in Mandarin. The assumption is that the telicity effect of different incremental objects of an accomplish...
