Abstract: The objective of this study was to investigate teachers’ feedback provision behaviour and students’ involvement in EFL classes in Higher Education Institutions at Wolkite University in Ethiopia. The study was a descriptive case study with a mixed methods approach, but mainly qualitative. Data were collected through classroom observations, interviews and questionnaires. The participants of the study were English language teachers and first-year students of Wolkite University. A simple random sampling technique was used to select and observe seven teachers. Each class was observed twice. A purposive sampling technique was also employed to select the seven sample teachers for interviews. Besides, 31 EFL teachers, who were selected purposefully, filled in the questionnaire. Furthermore, 230 students were taken from the target classes through a stratified sampling technique. Of these, fourteen students (i.e., two students from each observed class) who were randomly chosen were interviewed face-to-face. The findings were analysed qualitatively and quantitatively. The qualitative data were analysed using open Code 4.02 and corpus analysis toolkit (AntConc) software programs, and for the quantitative data, percentages were used. Hence, the findings indicated that EFL teachers’ recast frequently in the form of implicit corrective feedback, and learners were not able to comprehend that errors were committed and then repaired by their teachers. Lastly, it was found that teachers dominated students’ feedback/correction behaviour. Therefore, findings of the study suggest that curriculum designers, language experts, researchers and teacher training programs should give due emphasis to teachers’ on feedback provision behvaiours in EFL class alongside the pedagogic activities of students’ oral practise. Moreover, teachers should be sensitive enough to know when to intervene and provide scaffolding, and teacher training colleges and/or universities should give training on how to provide feedback for learners.

Abstract: In any qualitative study, the question of validity and reliability often becomes an issue to the extent that questions are asked about whether any rigour was applied in carrying out the study. Qualitative data is ‘interpretive’ this means that the researcher brings his/her own perspective to the interpretation by building patterns, categories and themes through learning and understanding the pedagogical beliefs of the participants. This also means that a researcher needs to be careful and precise when selecting her themes and how the data will be derived in her findings. Thus, the study adopted multiple methods and multiple sources of data to triangulate the findings as well as to determine which participants claimed to have an understanding or knowledge of the Malaysian formative assessment or to have experienced a significant change in practices since its introduction. Multiple sources of data were used, comparing and cross-checking data collected through observations at different times or places or interview data gathered from people with varying perspectives or from follow-up interviews with the same individuals. The researcher also returned to each school to have my three participants validate my findings (to agree or disagree with them) and to determine whether they had something further to explain about their own pedagogical beliefs and actions regarding formative assessment. In other words, she applied a member checking ‘dialogic approach’ to deal with the validity of the study rather than just depending on the researcher’s own interpretation of the teachers’ practices.

Abstract: Chinese women have been appearing and starring in American films for over a century. However, the type of portrayals of Chinese women on screen, starting from the 1920’s up until now, have evolved greatly. This investigation’s objective is to analyze how the portrayal of Chinese Women in American films evolved from one-dimensional stereotypes, such as the “Dragon Lady” and the “Lotus Blossom”, to the complex and varied roles offered to Chinese Women today— ranging from princesses to multiverse travelling mothers. The investigation will also examine the historical contexts that brought the harmful and overtly sexualized “Dragon Lady” and “Lotus Blossom” stereotypes to fruition, such as the Page Act of 1875 which prohibited the entry of women of any “oriental” descent into the US, assuming most of them to be prostitutes. This investigation will be done by using landmark films with Chinese women-played roles spanning one century, starting with the 1922 film The Toll of The Sea to the 2022 film Everything Everywhere All at Once, to analyze how the portrayals have transformed. The investigation eventually comes to the conclusion, that while the portrayals of Chinese women in Hollywood initially resulted from Western misconceptions and over-sexualization of the East, these prejudices were eventually mostly shed, leading to more nuanced and varied Chinese-woman played roles in Hollywood. Compared to the roles available for Chinese women in the 1920s, modern roles for Chinese women are significantly more diverse, with Chinese women now being portrayed as princesses, warriors, mothers, romantic leads, martial artists, and more.
