Abstract: This article is a fledgling exploratory test of the theoretical article we previously wrote, "Belonging a Key Concept to Explain Success in Higher Education in the Netherlands. This article reports on the beliefs of first year students at Windesheim University of Applied Sciences on the topics of Belonging, and Attachment. COVID-19 is an intervening variable in this study. The main outcome is that Windesheim University of Applied Sciences -in particular Social Work- has done well to establish learning communities. Students appreciate this approach. There they have the feeling to be heard and understood. They also have the idea in the learning community that they are cared about as people. Our conclusion is that learning communities contribute to belonging. Nevertheless, we suggest a number of improvements. Improvements that are badly needed because the students are mostly non-Western and the teachers are mainly native Dutch. Improvement 1 is to involve the extended family in the education, which is common in the non-Western world. An extended family can possibly help prevent students from dropping out. Improvement 2 is to give education a positive spin, by stopping focusing on a competition for the highest grades. Improvement 3 is to ensure that the teachers are a representative reflection of the students at Windesheim University of Applied Sciences, social work. The likelihood then increases that students will be more seen and valued in their cultural identities.

Abstract: With the acceleration of the aging process in China, reading as a means of addressing the spiritual needs of the elderly cannot be disregarded. Exploring the current situation and the factors that influence reading among the elderly is essential for establishing a national reading society. Based on the principle of supply equilibrium of demand, this study uses the method of questionnaire and interview research with older adults over the age of 60 as the research target to explore the current situation of reading needs, reading intention, and reading habits among the elderly in China, as well as their affecting factors. The results of this study showed that the elderly people in China have a high willingness to read and some awareness of reading consumption, but a low willingness to consume reading at the same time. The initiative of reading behavior of the elderly people is not strong in their daily life. The study also discovered that the reading behaviors of the elderly in China are influenced by factors such as education level, firmly established reading style, few reading channels, high reading costs, and so on. It was also concluded that the supply of electronic reading material, as well as the reading needs of the elderly, are currently out of sync with the traditional reading service system.

Abstract: President Reagan gave a military boost to relations with Morocco, the likes of which had not been seen since the start of the Western Sahara conflict in 1975. The Republican president’s strategy was to strengthen his ally so that it might emerge victorious from the war that had begun with its occupation of the Spanish colony. Reagan was a staunch believer in the use of force to resolve international conflicts, all of which were viewed from the standpoint of confrontation with the USSR. He did not care about the evidence stacking up against his argument in this case. Little did it matter that the conflict in the Sahara showed no signs of belonging to the long list of proxy wars between the two powers. Reality was invented by creating alternative facts. In this article it will become clear how erratic the US Republican administration’s viewpoint was. The war in the Sahara should never have been seen as a link in the Cold War, but as a local conflict in a specific region of North-West Africa. Such thinking has prolonged this human drama for decades, making it one of the most enduring and longest-lasting wars today.

Abstract: This contribution provides summary information on the historical and contemporary significance of lampreys for human life. The unusual to bizarre appearance of lampreys initially posed a problem for zoologists to correctly classify lampreys in the zoological system. In certain places, lampreys are used as bait in sport fishing, and a total of seven species are fished extensively for gastronomic purposes in Europe, North America, Australia, and Asia. New information about role of lampreys in human gastronomy was obtained by studying historical sources from Central Europe, especially from the region of Bohemia. The first specific cooking recipes have been preserved from the turn of the 15th and 16th Centuries. Instructions for cooking lampreys were mentioned by Georg Handsch von Limus, Paulus de Praga, Jan Severin the Younger and Pavel Severin of Kapí mountain. The quality of their meat is excellent, however, the slime and serum are poisonous, so there are known historical data about probable poisoning after their consumption. At present, lampreys are routinely available fresh, fried, smoked, marinated, canned or in vinegar. Lampreys play an important role in the culture and folklore of some nations. For example, lampreys are ecologically and culturally important for the North American Indian tribes of Yurok and Karuk.. The Pacific lamprey is also of spiritual significance for these tribes. The enormous esteem people have for lampreys is also reflected in the various coats of arms, in which the lamprey appears. Cooking skills and traditions are practiced at various public festivals where lampreys are caught and immediately consumed after cooking (e.g., Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Portugal, Spain). Lampreys have become an important model group in evolutionary studies of vertebrate development, and due to their remarkable properties, they are also used in biomedical research. Lampreys can be used for long-term bioindication of water environment, but their larvae are not a suitable bioindicator of short-term water quality worsening (see research results from the Czech Republic). Based on the analysis of the lamprey’s specific method of swimming, biologists and engineers created a biomimetic robot with an electronic nervous system that imitated the movement and orientation of lampreys in the water. Nevertheless, there is also an example of the harmful effect of lampreys, namely the parasitic sea lamprey, which causes significant damage to economically important fish in the Great Lakes, requiring a yearly implementation of financially expensive measures to eliminate the lamprey.

Abstract: In Iran, there are two statutes with regard to the protection of literary and artistic works, namely the Act on Protection of Authors and Composers 1969 and the Act on Translating and Reproducing Publications and Audio Works 1973 (from here on respectively, APAC and ATRP). In addition, computer programs are protected by the Act on the Protection of Computer Program Authors (APCP) ratified in 2000. These statutes, when closely examined, reveal the differences of the authors' material rights in terms of duration and methods of protection, although there are similarities between literary and artistic works and computer programs. This issue has affected the exceptions stipulated in material rights where these differences are observed in a larger scale. In this regard, computer programs, unlike literary and artistic works, cannot be used for educational purposes while modifications, arrangements, making backups, etc. are permitted. These differences, however, are natural and necessary when taking into account the essential differences of these genres—i.e., the commercial aspect of computer programs which outweighs its literary and artistic aspects as opposed to works of art and literature. Therefore, it seems that according to the laws of Iran regarding the Material rights belonging to the authors of computer programs an exclusive system which is not only based on literary and artistic works has been accepted.

Abstract: As Leonardo da Vinci used to say: "every cat, even the smallest one, is a masterpiece." The text is an attempt to show the role of this domestic animal in culture from antiquity to the present day. In comparison to the dogs, they find much less reference in culture, tradition, beliefs or art. Nevertheless, cats do show up in every civilization and culture, playing both positive and negative roles as well over the centuries. In European and Christian cultures they appear much more often in negative contexts and pejorative symbolism. In some cultures they were worshiped, given inviolability, treated as a deity, in others they were ignored or even considered to be the embodiment of Satan. Although the cat does not appear directly in the Bible, it is a common symbolic theme for scenes related to Christ, such as the Last Supper and the Feast of Emmaus. Along with the spread of the cat as a companion-household member of human life, the interest in the cat in art, mainly in painting, increases, as exemplified by numerous works by masters of painting, which this text presents while recalling successive eras. In the course of history, the cat was first worshiped, then it lost its importance, only to regain it in a different form, as a companion of human life, a pet and a household member. The cat has permanently entered the canon of the world art through outstanding works of European painters, and has also found its place in popular culture.

Abstract: This article demonstrates that the Universal Human Right to asylum is not uniformly guaranteed to all asylum seekers pursuing refuge in Western countries. Specifically, many Western countries accept fewer asylum seekers than might be expected based on their population size. Moreover, there are a number of Western countries that demonstrate a clear bias against asylum seekers originating from Africa and the Middle East; people who are attempting to escape extremely dire circumstances. To arrive at these conclusions, a tripartite approach was implemented. First, elaborations were made on the existing theoretical foundations used by the West that frame the refugee as not "Our Kind of People" or "Our Kind of Color." Second, a mathematical assessment was applied to quantify the forcibly displaced persons from around the world using data extracted from the UNHCR that factually evidences this bias. Lastly, qualitative assessments were made that examined the policy and practices that govern the treatment of refugees and asylum seekers in select Western countries, including Australia, Türkiye, Palestine, the European Union, Canada, and the United States. These three lines unequivocally demonstrate the influence of institutional racism on the mass migration of people seeking asylum in Western Countries.
