Abstract

The growth of energy demand throughout the world and the need for combating climate change are the driving forces motivating technological evolution in sustainable energy. Chemistry is at its heart for efficient utilization, storage, con-version, and transformation of renewable energy. This article reviews highlights on several important areas where chemistry is involved in sustainable energy such as photovoltaic materials for solar power, catalysts for hydrogen production and fuel cells, next-generation battery technologies, and bio-fuels. Chemically advanced high-performance materials perovskite solar cells or lithium-sulphur batteries find their bases in better efficiency and stability. In addition, by principles of green chemistry, production of sustainable fuels and energy carriers moves to farther replacement of fossil sources. All these chemistries drive toward a cleaner and sustainable energy future by solving most challenges in energy storage, conversion efficiencies, and material sustainability.
