Abstract

This presentation will showcase the results of an ongoing project to identify, analyze, characterize, and assess the impact of PhD holders from Portuguese-speaking countries from the 19th century to the present day. Specifically, this article will give special emphasis to identifying docti originating from Goa, Mozambique, Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, São Tomé and Príncipe, and East Timor. For each of these countries/regions, a survey was conducted using various sources, from publications and reference texts to collection via informal written and oral channels. The objective is essentially to identify and catalog Master's and Doctoral theses, as well as Honorary Doctorates, from scholars originating from Portuguese-speaking countries or regions. This is an ongoing work, far from finished, but it already allows for the presentation of quite relevant preliminary results, deserving immediate dissemination and application within the context of Association of Portuguese-Speaking Universities (AULP) members. The results obtained allow, on the one hand, raising awareness of this work within the Portuguese-speaking community and, on the other hand, enhancing the reception of new contributions and increasing the scope and characterization of the ongoing study. By way of illustration in the context of this summary, it should be noted that, although the current study focuses essentially on the 20th century, in Angola it dates back to the creation of the Medical School of Angola in 1791, headed by Dr. José Pinto de Azeredo, and in Goa, there is a focus on the last two centuries, going back to medical teaching at the Goa Hospital (1821). In this preliminary study, Masters and PhDs with a relevant role in the science and history of their countries and regions will be presented for each country and/or region, totaling more than one hundred individuals. The ultimate goal of the project is to create a publicly accessible portal, and a set of associated publications, where it will be possible to consult, in a chronological, geographical and thematic way, the relevant personalities and their intervention and impact on the development of science and society.
