Abstract

This study examines the evolution of land use patterns in Punjab and Haryana from 1960-61 to 2020-21, highlighting key transformations in agricultural land, urban expansion, forest cover, and environmental concerns. Over the decades, Punjab has remained predominantly agrarian, while Haryana has experienced a gradual shift towards industrialization and ur-banization. The impact of intensive farming practices, deforestation, and land degradation is evident in both states, with issues such as groundwater depletion and declining soil fertility becoming more prominent. Additionally, climate change has contributed to erratic monsoon patterns and an increase in extreme weather events, further affecting land use. The study also incorporates recent environmental trends, including a reduction in stubble burning and efforts towards sustainable land management. This research underscores the need for balanced regional development strategies that consider both economic growth and environmental sustainability.
