Abstract: The artist Jorge Oteiza (Orio, Spain, 1908-2003) is considered one of the main sculptors of the 20th century. Jorge Oteiza won the International Sculpture Prize at the IV São Paulo Biennial, held in 1957, which elevated him internationally. Oteiza's conceptual evolution as a sculptor moves him towards a special relationship with the unoccupied space, the void, seeking a metaphysics of space through absence or negativity, where light also plays a prominent role, being incorporated into the sculptural process. These ideas are concretized in the negative relief mural that he calls Direct Relief / Homage to Bach (1956). This exceptional work from the limited production of his mural works provides an interesting field of study that helps complete the understanding of his thinking and the keys to his aesthetics. Nevertheless, this work is not only close to a plastic-spatial dimension. The work also conveys the special relationship of the Oriotarra sculptor with music in general and Baroque in particular and his concern for serialist avant-garde music and its possibility of plastic representation. The present article tries to make an approach to the interpretation of this work, studying in an analytical and synthetic way the artistic, musical and plastic thought of the artist.

Clothing for the College Girls from the Victorian Days to the 1940s

Abstract: The paper provides an insight regarding the clothing for college girls from the Victorian days to the 1940s. It elaborates on game wears, clothing for tea and cocoa parties, evening dresses, and academic dresses while taking into consideration the degree being pursued. The primary sources for information are their autobiographies, memoirs, diaries, letters, and other records. Upon studying these records a few factors are evident. College girls attempted to cope with ‘double conformity’, that is, two standards, 'to study better than the men’ and ‘to be ladylike’. However, these often could not be achieved together. They managed to address this by first changing dark day dresses into beautiful evening dresses, and second, by wearing academic dresses with triangular soft caps which demonstrated both their professionalism and seriousness of purpose and their femininity. Furthermore, clothes played an important role in indicating their identity. While participating in sports, game wear had an important role in displaying solidarity and promoting a sense of belonging to their own team or college. When the ceremonies such as evening and tea parties were held, they wore special dresses for the parties to display a sense of participation in their community.

The Artistic Truth of the Web Series

Abstract: In China, the popularity of the web series has soared over recent years. Web series are popular due to their technical characteristics, their flexible and intriguing narrative skills and the progression of cyberculture, which distinguish web series from traditional television programmes. However, these traits can also lead to some negative drawbacks, such as the lack of originality, the homogenisation of content, and the exaggeration and sensationalism of real-life situations. These problems are likely to put artistic truth of web series at risk, transforming them into endless homogeneous audio-visual products, thus affecting the artistic creativity of their visual images. The first section of this study explores the development of the web series by analysing external factors, including interactive modes, technical production and commercial investment. The second section focuses on the internal factors contributing to the transformation of the content of the web series. The final section investigates how these changes result in diminishing artistic truth of the web series. The paper concludes that technological innovations enable web series to produce more vivid experiences, and the extreme fantasies they create enable viewers to indulge their endless desires and become addicted to the virtual world, even making them reluctant to face the real world.

Abstract: The idea behind the research study lies mainly in the traveling art of the artist, as well as in her friendliness and affection for the poor young performers of the circus, as well as in the refreshing of old recreation shows. The resilient nation of Pakistan has long suffered the turmoil of terrorist attacks. Such heinous acts against civilians and security forces have created, albeit short-lived, a sense of demoralization in the society. The research was conducted as a qualitative analysis and covered the back story of homelessness and at-risk Circus youth / artists, life style (container / cottage), difficulties, learning, travel, and management, etc. It is a unique attempt in Pakistan's Art Studio to design and manufacture contemporary jewelry pieces (brooches) reflecting the circumstances of the Circus youth / workers / artists' lifestyle, physical and emotional integrity was a rich source of inspiration that motivated me during my replication and analysis process. For circus artists, the carnival continues to travel; it keeps moving from one city to another to perform and entertain people. Hence highlighting their societal challenges and being closely associated to political, cultural and artistic realities. The art pieces of the project help to illustrate and understand the lives of circus performers, deprived of the freedom of the conditions under which they work, and the fun fashion they adopt in return.

Transforming Learning Through User-Centered Design Research Methods

Abstract: This paper considers how design educators can harness the evolving nature of design practice to enhance learning for design students. It sets out the reasoning for embedding user-centered design research methods in the curriculum, describes the potential of these methods to transform learning and, as a result, better prepare graduates for their future career. Project-based learning was employed to explore the potential impact of embedding user-centered design research methods in the curriculum. Two project-based case studies, conducted with undergraduate design and design and marketing students in separate UK universities, illustrate how user-centered design research methods have been applied across traditional discipline boundaries. We report on student experiences immediately, and longitudinally (12 months) after the completion of the projects. Thematic analysis of semi-structured interviews with students on completion of the projects revealed that a more holistic understanding of the design process was developed through the use of user-insights generated as a result of engagement with these methods. While this process had caused positive tensions and recognition of the need to move beyond the self and to put themselves in other people’s shoes, the insights generated informed subsequent design activity and provided a clearer link between research and design development. After 12 months, thematic analysis of follow-up interviews revealed changes in design practices through adoption of structured user-centered methods had led to an enhanced appreciation of contextual factors and underpinned and better justified design decisions. Detailed analysis of the findings informed the development of a Transforming Learning Framework which articulates how the adoption of user-centered design research methods shapes students longer-term understanding of, and approaches to, design. This framework conveys how new frames of reference and critical reflection led to an enhanced design skillset and mindset and as such provides new insights that have the potential to advance understandings of pedagogic practice. Finally, the research revealed that exposure to user-centered design research methods enhanced sensitivity to, and awareness of, user needs; increased understanding of context and the breadth of issues relevant in early stages of the design process; and amplified students confidence helping better prepare them for professional practice.
