About This Special Issue
The availability of an affordable and sustainable energy supply across the African continent is an essential element in improving the living conditions of people and for sustaining economic development. The special issue is dedicated to answering some of the fundamental questions in how power networks or power supply systems may be used to mitigate some energy problems in Africa. What external and internal events affect the stability and reliability of the networks their capacity of supply the load needed at any time? What are the costs of interruptions for the utility customers and the economy as a whole? How should networks be sized to meet the requirements of the customers affecting the costs of power supply? What planning and design approaches can be used to obtain optimum arrangements not just in the cities but also for the not-yet-electrified communities in rural areas of sub Saharan Africa and other parts of Africa? How can the entire system be managed in terms of tariffs condition monitoring asset replacement and in many other aspects to make the supply the most economical possible in a changing world?

Abstract: This paper explored a novel method for strategic monitoring of a power system to schematically monitor power system variables that are sensitive to transients. The characteristics of a fully developed transient or power swing increase frequency slip rates, generator pole slips, rotor out-of-step etc. whose effects lead to loss of synchronism of coh... Abstract: A hybrid energy system combines multiple types of energy generation in order to meet the demand of the users effectively and efficiently. The Solar-Wind hybrid system consists of electrical energy generated from wind and solar PV systems, it is a valuable method in the transition away from fossil fuel based economies. It capitalizes on existing win... Show More

Abstract: Wind power generation source differs in several respects from conventional sources of energy like hydro and thermal. Furthermore, wind generators are usually based on different generator technologies other than the conventional synchronous generators. The stochastic nature of wind, makes it very difficult to control the generator power output. Most... Show More
