About This Special Issue
Ischemic stroke (IS) accounts for 85% of all cerebrovascular diseases and remains a major cause of death and severe disability worldwide.1 It is caused by transient or permanent Ischemia of brain tissue due to arterial stenosis or occlusion, with an estimated loss of two millions of neurons for every minute of delay in reperfusion therapies.2 IS represents therefore a medical emergency requiring prompt recognition and treatment within a narrow time window. Aim of this topic is to focus on all aspect of stroke, from acute phases in the department of emergency and stroke unit (remembering that “time is brain”) to prognosis, without forgetting rehabilitation. We also want to focus on prevention and possible risk factors for ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke.
