Abstract

As a complex system of nature and man-made, the spatial form of the city has an inherent law and evolutionary mechanism. The urban morphology of Cannes has changed dramatically from its initial development as a small fishing village to the present. In this paper, the urban morphology of Cannes, France, is studied from the perspective of urban typology, combined with the methods of documentation and historical map analysis. Firstly, the city functions and economic and social development are taken as clues, and three main urban development stages are identified, namely "fishing village", "aristocratic resort city" and "landscape tourism city". The city of Cannes has gone through three main stages of development, namely "fishing village", "noble resort city" and "landscape tourist city". On this basis, the article analyzes the characteristics and driving forces of Cannes' urban development, namely, the city's origins in religious and military activities, its development due to the impetus of European aristocrats who came to the city, and its eventual prosperity due to the good development of the transportation industry. With the help of satellite maps and historical maps, the article summarizes and analyzes the evolution of each urban morphological element, such as city boundaries, roads, street forms and property plots, and discusses the characteristics of the urban morphological composition of Cannes and the forces at work.
